On a BMW X1 E84 we fitted Menabo Lince Silver roof bars and a Menabo Marathon Dark 460 roof box, in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: BMW X1 E84 (first generation)

The BMW X1 E84 is the first generation of the X1, a 5-door subcompact SUV built on the 3 Series E90 platform. It was built from October 2009 to June 2015, and the updates were presented in 2012 at the New York Auto Show. In mid-2015 it was replaced by the F48 model.

On this X1 the roof rails are raised, and aluminium roof bars attach to them, on which the roof box is then fitted. This type of roof matters: the maximum roof load must be checked before fitting, and we check it together.

What we fitted on this BMW X1

Menabo Lince Silver roof bars are 1,200 mm long, 30 mm high and 80 mm wide, are made of aluminium and have a 20 mm track for T-track fitting of accessories along the whole length. They carry 90 kg and are TÜV and ISO/PAS 11154:2006 approved.

The Menabo Marathon Dark 460 has a volume of 460 litres, is made of matt black ABS and is about 36 cm high. It has the 60 mm U-bolt and 20 mm T-track fittings included, an anti-theft lock, and opens on one side. It is compatible with Menabo Lince, Tema and Delta roof bars.

Technical details and what to watch for

• The Marathon Dark 460 box has a volume of 460 litres and a height of 36 cm, and this height adds to the height of the car; measure the total height before car parks or garages.
• The Lince Silver roof bars carry 90 kg; the weight of the accessories, including the box, is subtracted from this capacity, and the maximum load may differ depending on the make and model of the car.
• The bars have an anti-theft lock with 4 locks and keys, and the Marathon box has its own anti-theft lock.
• The Lince Silver roof bars come with an Allen key, so you do not need any other tool.
• The box opens on one side, so leave enough room to open it when you are parked close to a wall or another car.
