BMW 1 Series (E87) with Menabo Logic 3 tailgate bike rack

About the car: BMW 1 Series, E87 generation

The E81, E82, E87 and E88 generations were built between 2004 and 2013, on the BMW L2 platform. The 5-door hatchback, the E87, was built between 2004 and 2011, and the 3-door version, the E81, appeared in July 2007. From 2011, the model that gradually replaced the E81 and E87 hatchbacks is the F20/F21.

In the photo of the fitting, the car is a hatchback with a 118d badge, and no roof rails can be seen on the roof, only the aerial. The rack sits on the tailgate, resting on the rear window, and on a hatchback it matters that the rear lights and number plate stay visible.

What we fitted on this BMW 1 Series

We fitted the the Menabo Logic 3 rack, the version for three bikes. It is a foldable steel rack for the tailgate that takes up to 45 kg. It attaches with clamps at 4 points, and the rubber pads and clamps protect the bodywork and the bikes.

The rack weighs 14.1 kg, and the bikes are held by the frame and by the wheels. A bike lock is optional, not included. You will find the fitting instructions below as a PDF.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Specifications: steel, 14.1 kg, for 3 bikes, maximum weight 45 kg, foldable, packaging 101 x 60 x 9.5 cm.
• Bikes: the bikes do not touch each other. The rack does not take e-bikes or fat bikes.
• Load: weigh the bikes before you set off, so that you stay under the 45 kg limit.
• Visibility: after fitting, check that the number plate and rear lights stay visible.
