About the car: BMW X1
For a roof box, what matters first is what the car has on the roof. Some cars have flush roof rails, while others have a bare roof. In the first case the roof bars attach to the roof rails, and in the second you use roof bars with a fitting kit for the bodywork, matched to the model. Before you order, check what your car has.
The maximum roof load includes the roof bars, the box and the luggage in it. Check the permitted roof load in your car's documentation, then subtract the weight of the roof bars and the box to find out how much remains for luggage.
What we fitted on this BMW X1
On the roof of the car we fitted the Menabo Marathon Dark 400 roof box, made of matt black ABS plastic. It has a volume of 400 litres, carries a maximum of 50 kg and weighs 13.2 kg empty. It opens on the right-hand side, so you load it from the pavement, not from the road, and it is lockable.
In the box you will find two fitting systems: 60 mm U-bolts, which tighten around the outside of the bar, and 20 mm T-bolt fittings, which go into the T-track of the bar. 80 mm U-bolts are optional, with the code 000065000000. The product page confirms compatibility with Menabo Omega, Tema, Delta, Brio and Tiger roof bars, and with Thule, Yakima or K39 roof bars.
In the video below you can see the Marathon box up close, and the fitting instructions are below, as a PDF.

Useful details about the Marathon Dark 400 box
- Volume 400 litres, maximum load 50 kg, empty box weight 13.2 kg.
- Calculation: the full box weighs 13.2 + 50 = 63.2 kg at most. To this you add the weight of the roof bars, and the total must stay below the capacity of the roof bars and below the permitted roof load of the car.
- Fitting included: 60 mm U-bolts and 20 mm T-bolt fittings. 80 mm U-bolts are ordered separately, with the code 000065000000.
- With the box on the roof bars, the car becomes about 36 cm taller, plus the height of the roof bars. Keep this in mind at underground car parks and garages.
- The box is lockable and opens on the right-hand side. Check regularly that nothing blocks the rear lights and the number plate.
