BMW X1 E84 2009-2012 with Menabo Tema roof bars and a Menabo Mania 400 roof box

On a BMW X1 E84 from 2009-2012 we fitted Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars and a Menabo Mania 400 ABS Black roof box at the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: BMW X1 E84 (2009-2012)

The BMW X1 E84 was the first X1, a compact 5-door SUV with 5 seats, 4,454 mm long, built on the BMW 3 Series E90 platform. Production began in October 2009, and the car in this fitting is from the first phase, before the 2012 facelift.

Roof rails were optional on the X1 E84, and our car does not have them. On a bare roof, the roof bars attach directly to the bodywork with a fitting kit made for this model. The Tema kit is different for the 2009-2012 and 2012-2015 versions. The 2009 BMW data sheet gives a roof load of 75 kg for the launch models, but with these bars the real limit is that of the bars, 50 kg.

What we fitted on this BMW X1 E84

We started with Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars for the BMW X1 (E84), 5-door, 2009-2012. They are oval-profile bars, 1,300 mm long, with a 48 x 30 mm section, and the metal parts are treated with rubberised paint and an anti-corrosion coating. The set contains 4 vehicle-specific clamps for the X1 E84, 4 feet, 2 aluminium bars, 4 locks with keys and an Allen key. The bars carry up to 50 kg and are TÜV and ISO approved.

Fitted on the bars is the Menabo Mania 400 ABS Black roof box, made of gloss black ABS, with a volume of 400 litres. The box carries up to 75 kg, has a lock, opens on the right and is fitted without special tools. The 20 mm T-bolts go into the T-track on top of the Tema bars, and the package also includes 60 mm U-bolts.

What you need to know about this set

• Tema Aluminium bars: 1,300 mm, silver, 20 mm T-track, lockable, 50 kg capacity, set weight 5.2 kg.
• Mania 400 Black box: 400 litres, maximum load 75 kg, 60 mm U-bolts and 20 mm T-bolts included. 80 mm U-bolts are optional, with the code 000065000000.
• Calculation: although the box carries 75 kg, the total on the Tema bars cannot exceed 50 kg. Subtract the weight of the empty box from the 50 kg, and what is left is how much you can put in it.
• With the bars and box on the roof, the car is about 36 cm taller (box plus bars), so watch out for garages and underground car parks.
