BMW X5 E70 with Menabo Jackson roof bars and Menabo Diamond DUO 450 roof box

On a BMW X5 E70, the second generation of the model, we fitted Menabo Jackson roof bars and a Menabo Diamond DUO 450 Black roof box. The fitting was done by the team at the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom, located at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: BMW X5 E70 (2006-2013)

The BMW X5 E70 is the second-generation X5 and was built from July 2006 to July 2013 on the BMW L4 platform. In 2010 it received the Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) update, presented at the New York Auto Show in April 2010. It is a 5-door SUV with 5 seats or, optionally, 7 seats.

The car in this fitting has raised roof rails, that is, rails set apart from the roof, and the Jackson roof bars were attached directly to them. For a large box, the roof load limit matters: the BMW press technical data sheet for the X5 xDrive30d and xDrive40d E70 LCI, valid from 9/2011, gives a maximum roof load of 100 kg. This figure includes the roof bars, the box and everything you put in it.

What we fitted on this BMW X5 E70

On the roof we first put the Menabo Jackson roof bar set, and on top of it the Menabo Diamond DUO 450 Black roof box. The box data sheet explicitly lists the Diamond as compatible with Menabo Jackson roof bars, so it is fitted without an adaptor, using the 20 mm T-track Quick Fix system from the package.

The advantage of the DUO version is that it opens on both sides: you can load luggage from the left or the right of the X5, which is useful when you park next to a wall or at the roadside. The box has a volume of 450 litres and an external length of about 163 cm. It is made of glossy black ABS plastic, has an integrated anti-theft lock and is TÜV and City Crash tested.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Menabo Diamond DUO 450: volume 450 litres, maximum load 75 kg, own weight 19 kg.
• External length about 163 cm, opens on both sides, glossy black ABS plastic and integrated anti-theft lock.
• Load calculation: 19 kg for the box plus 75 kg of luggage makes 94 kg. The weight of the Jackson roof bars is added to that, and the total must not exceed the limit of the bars or the 100 kg in the BMW data sheet for the X5 E70 LCI.
• Fitting: 20 mm T-track Quick Fix system included; the Quick Fix clamp system (item 000082500000) is optional.
• With the box on the roof, the X5 becomes taller: measure the total height before entering underground car parks or garages.
