About the car: Kia Soul first generation (AM)

The first-generation Kia Soul has the model code AM and was produced from 2008 to 2013. For the 2012 model year it received revised exterior and interior styling, and new engines. It is a 5-door, 5-seat hatchback built on the Hyundai-Kia PB platform. The second generation was launched in 2013, as a 2014 model.

On the Soul, the roof bars attach to the car's raised roof rails, and the roof box is fitted on the roof bars. So the roof matters for fitting: the box needs well-secured roof bars, and the height of the car increases with the box fitted. Before fitting, check that the roof bars are firmly secured on the roof rails.

What we fitted on this Soul

We fitted the the Menabo Mania 320 ABS Black roof box, with a volume of 320 litres, made of ABS plastic in gloss black. It opens on one side, has a lock and a maximum load of 50 kg. The box has room for large luggage, trolley cases and bags.

The standard fitting is with 60 mm U-bolts, included in the package. For 20 mm T-bolts there is an optional adapter, and 80 mm U-bolts are also optional. The product page lists compatibility with Menabo Tiger, Thule SquareBar and K39 King bars, among others.

Technical details and what to watch for

• The volume of the box is 320 litres, and the maximum load is 50 kg.
• It opens on one side, and the box has a lock.
• The standard fitting is with 60 mm U-bolts. For 20 mm T-bolts you need the optional adapter.
• Before setting off, check the height of the car with the box on the roof, especially in underground car parks or under barriers.
• The 80 mm U-bolts are optional, as is the 20 mm T-bolt adapter, so choose the variant that suits your bars.
