About the car: Mazda 3 fourth generation (BP) Saloon

The fourth generation of the Mazda 3 carries the code BP and has been built since 2019, with its European debut in March 2019, as a hatchback and as a Saloon. It sits on the Skyactiv Small Product Group platform. The car we had in the shop is a silver 4-door Saloon with the large grille and slim headlights typical of the BP generation.

The roof of the BP Saloon has no roof rails, so the roof bars fit directly onto the roof, with feet made for this model. The Mazda UK specification guide gives a maximum roof load of 75 kg for the Mazda 3 BP, on both the hatchback and the Saloon, without saying whether this includes the bars. Because Mazda sells different original roof bars for the two body styles, it is worth choosing the exact kit for the Saloon.

What we fitted on this Mazda 3 BP Saloon

We fitted the Menabo Tema aluminium roof bars, one of the best-known roof bars on the market. The Tema has an oval, aerodynamic profile, 30 mm high and 48 mm wide, and its metal parts are treated with rubberised paint and anti-corrosion protection. The set carries a maximum of 50 kg and is TÜV and ISO approved.

On top of each bar there is a 20 mm T-track where accessories attach with a T-track fitting; if your accessory has no T-track fitting, you fix it with U-bolts around the outside of the bar. The pack contains 4 fixing systems, 4 feet, 2 silver aluminium bars, 4 locks with keys and an Allen key, so you need no other tools.

Technical details and what to watch for

  • Bar profile: oval, 30 mm high and 48 mm wide, in silver aluminium.
  • T-track on top: 20 mm, for T-track fittings; accessories without a T-track fitting attach with U-bolts around the outside.
  • Capacity: 50 kg on the bars, below the 75 kg allowed on the roof of the Mazda 3 BP, so the real limit is 50 kg.
  • Useful calculation: a 5 kg bike rack leaves 45 kg for bikes, within the 50 kg limit of the bars.
  • Anti-theft lock: 4 locks with keys.
  • Noise: with the bars fitted, our guide advises not to exceed 130 km/h.
  • Instructions: the instruction manual is included in the pack.

Frequently asked questions

Which roof bars fit the Mazda 3 BP Saloon?

On the Mazda 3 BP Saloon we fitted Menabo Tema aluminium roof bars, attached directly to the roof with vehicle-specific feet, because the roof has no roof rails. Choose the kit for the Saloon body, not the hatchback, because Mazda also offers different original roof bars for the two.

How much weight can the Menabo Tema aluminium roof bars carry?

Can I fit a bike rack with T-track fitting on the Menabo Tema roof bars?

Yes, the Menabo Tema aluminium roof bars have a 20 mm T-track on top, suitable for accessories with T-track fitting; accessories without it attach with U-bolts. You will find suitable models in the category roof-mounted bike racks (on roof bars).
