About the car: fitting on the towbar
Before you choose a towbar bike rack, check that your car has a towbar fitted. The rack attaches directly to the towbar, so you do not need roof bars. If you want to compare the types of rack, the guide to bike rack types explains them briefly.
With a towbar rack, the roof of the car does not matter. What matters instead is the back of the car, where the rack tilts away, which gives you access to the boot. One advantage is that the rack can also carry e-bikes or fat bikes, alongside normal ones, as explained in the guide to roof-mounted and towbar-mounted bike racks.
What we fitted on this towbar
We fitted the Menabo Alcor 2 towbar-mounted bike rack for 2 bikes. It attaches to the towbar with the rapid-lock system, locks both the rack and the bikes, and the rack tilts away, so you can reach the boot even with it fitted. The rack weighs 20 kg, and the bikes are secured on the platform.
If you need more places, there is also the Menabo Alcor 3 for 3 bikes and Menabo Alcor 4 for 4 bikes. Both have a maximum load of 25 kg per bike and 60 kg in total, have a 13/7-pin plug and are compatible with e-bikes and fat bikes. The Alcor 3 and Alcor 4 also accept the Menabo Mizar roof box.
Technical details and what to watch for
- The load capacity is read on two levels: 60 kg in total on the rack and no more than 25 kg per bike. When you choose between the Alcor 2, 3 and 4, count the bikes and check that none of them exceeds 25 kg.
- Alcor 2 dimensions: length 120 cm, width 21 cm, height 79 cm. The rack weighs 20 kg, so think about fitting and removing it when you choose.
- Visibility: the rack has its own rear lights, so the lighting stays visible in traffic. After fitting, check the rear lights and the 13/7-pin plug.
- Lock: it has a lock for both the rack and the bikes, useful when you park.
- E-bikes and fat bikes: the rack accepts e-bikes and fat bikes, as well as ordinary bikes.
