On a 5-door Opel Astra J hatchback we fitted a complete set for long trips: Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars, a Menabo Marathon Dark 460 roof box and a Thule FreeRide 532 bike rack. We did the fitting in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Opel Astra J (P09), 5-door hatchback
The Opel Astra J is the fourth generation of the Astra, with the internal code P09, built on the GM Delta II platform. It went on sale in November 2009 as a 2010 model, the hatchback was built until 2015, and in June 2012 Opel announced the facelift for the 2013 model year. The car in this fitting is a facelift Astra J, a 5-door hatchback.
The Astra J hatchback has no roof rails, so the roof bars attach directly to the body, at fixing points hidden under covers that open with a coin. The Opel manual sets the roof load at 75 kg for the hatchback (100 kg for the Sports Tourer), including the roof bars, the rack, the box and the luggage.
What we fitted on this Astra J
The base of the setup is the set of Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars for Opel Astra (J), 5-door, 2010-2016 model. The bars have an oval profile, 1,120 mm long, 30 mm high and 48 mm wide, with a 20 mm channel for accessories with T-track fixing. The kit has 4 dedicated fixings, 4 feet, 4 anti-theft locks with keys and an Allen key; the set weighs 4.9 kg and carries up to 50 kg.
On the roof bars we put the the Menabo Marathon Dark 460 roof box, 460 litres, made of matt black ABS, about 36 cm high, with a lock. It comes with a 60 mm U-bolt and a 20 mm T-track fitting and is listed as compatible with the Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars.
On the same bars we fitted Thule FreeRide 532 bike rack, made of steel, for one bike of up to 17 kg, with a round frame of 22-70 mm or an oval frame of 65x80 mm. It has a lock for the rack and for the bike, and fixes to the Tema through the 20 mm T-track.

Useful details for this fitting
- The roof of the Opel Astra J hatchback takes a maximum of 75 kg, including the roof bars and accessories (Opel manual, page 90).
- Load calculation for the bars: of the 50 kg the Tema bars carry, the FreeRide 532 rack (3.5 kg) and a bike of up to 17 kg take 20.5 kg, which leaves at most 29.5 kg for the Marathon box, including its own weight and the luggage.
- With the box on the roof, the car becomes at least 36 cm taller, plus the bars and their feet, so check the height limit at garages and underground car parks.
