About the car: Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (L538)

The first-generation Range Rover Evoque, with the code L538, was built from July 2011 to 2018, in 3-door and 5-door versions. The LR-MS (JLR D8) platform derives from the Ford EUCD, used on the Freelander 2, but 90% of the parts were redesigned. The white car in our fitting is a pre-facelift 5-door Evoque; on the model year 2016 version the fog lights sit higher, and the high-level brake light above the rear window is slimmer.

The Evoque roof is made of aluminium, and the fixed panoramic roof was optional. The car in the photos has no roof rails, which is why the roof bars fix on dedicated feet, with a kit made for this model. The official manual gives a maximum of 75 kg on the road and 50 kg off-road for a Land Rover approved roof bar system; with other roof bars, such as K39, the weight of the bars also counts towards this limit.

What we fitted on this Evoque

The base is formed by K39 steel roof bars for Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (L538), black bars of 1,300 mm, with a 20 x 30 mm profile, covered in a protective plastic layer, with the metal parts coated in rubberised paint against corrosion. They have no T-track, so accessories fix with the classic U-bolt fitting, minimum 30 mm. The set weighs 4 kg and is TÜV and ISO certified.

On top we fitted the Carbon Look 320L roof box, made of matt black polypropylene with a carbon texture, 131 cm long, 34 cm high, with a lock and opening on one side. It fixes with an 80 mm U-bolt fitting, and its product sheet lists it as compatible with the K39 K1 steel roof bars.

Technical details and what to watch for

  • K39 roof bars: 1,300 mm long, 20 mm high, 30 mm wide, black steel, 4 kg per set, maximum load 55 kg.
  • Carbon Look roof box: 320 L, 131 cm long, 34 cm high, maximum load 55 kg, 80 mm U-bolt fitting.
  • Roof bar calculation: the 55 kg of the K39 roof bars include the empty roof box, so what is left for luggage is 55 kg minus the weight of the roof box.
  • Roof calculation: on the road, 75 kg from the manual minus the 4 kg of the roof bars is 71 kg, above the limit of the roof bars, so the 55 kg decides; off-road, 50 kg minus 4 kg leaves 46 kg for the roof box and luggage, although the manual does not recommend off-roading with a loaded roof.
  • After the first 50 km check the fixing of the roof bars and the roof box, as the Evoque manual requires.
  • Height: take into account the 34 cm of the roof box, plus the roof bars and feet, when entering underground car parks.
  • Instructions: the roof box has a fitting manual as a PDF on the product page, and for the K39 roof bars the manual is included in the package.

Frequently asked questions

Which roof bars fit the Range Rover Evoque L538?

On a first-generation Range Rover Evoque (L538, 2011-2018) without roof rails, like the one in our fitting, you use roof bars with a body fitting kit made for the model. On this Evoque we fitted the K39 K1 steel roof bars, 1,300 mm, with a maximum load of 55 kg.

How much weight can the Carbon Look 320 L box carry?

The Carbon Look 320L roof box has a maximum load of 55 kg and a volume of 320 L. On a Range Rover Evoque L538 with K39 roof bars, the real limit is set by the roof bars, again 55 kg, from which the weight of the empty roof box is subtracted.

How much weight can I put on the roof of a Range Rover Evoque?

The official Range Rover Evoque (L538) manual gives a maximum of 75 kg on the road and 50 kg off-road for a Land Rover approved roof bar system. With roof bars of another make, such as K39, the weight of the bars counts towards this limit, and the load must be evenly distributed, without exceeding the capacity of the roof bars.

Does the Carbon Look roof box fit on K39 roof bars?

Yes, the Carbon Look 320L roof box fixes with an 80 mm U-bolt fitting, and the product sheet lists it as compatible with the K39 K1 steel roof bars. K39 roof bars accept accessories with a U-bolt fitting of at least 30 mm.
