Skoda Octavia Combi with Menabo Sherman Silver roof bars and Carbon Look 320L roof box

On a Skoda Octavia Combi with roof rails we fitted Menabo Sherman Silver roof bars and a 320-litre Carbon Look roof box. Everything was done in our shop at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Skoda Octavia II Combi (1Z)

The photos of this fitting show a second-generation Skoda Octavia Combi, after the facelift, with roof rails, roof bars and a roof box. The second generation, with the internal code 1Z, was built from March 2004 to March 2013 on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform, as a 5-door liftback and estate, and the facelift was launched in 2009. The Scout version, announced in 2006, was only available as an estate.

Roof rails completely change which roof bars you choose. A liftback without roof rails needs a kit that fits on the door frame, whereas on this Octavia Combi the roof bars attach directly to the roof rails. That is why we chose Menabo Sherman Silver, which comes with the feet pre-assembled and sits on the roof rails in a few steps.

What we fitted on this Octavia Combi

The first step was the Menabo Sherman Silver roof bars, an improved version of the Menabo Brio, with a rubber strip on the underside of the aluminium bar. The bars come assembled in the box, with an aerodynamic oval profile of 47 x 27 mm, a length of 1200 mm and a 20 mm T-track along the whole length. They are TÜV and ISO/PAS 11154:2006 tested and comply with DIN 75302.

On the bars we fitted the the Carbon Look 320L roof box, made of matt black polypropylene with a carbon texture. It holds 320 litres, is 131 cm long and 34 cm high, opens on one side, has a lock and fits with an 80 mm U-bolt system, with no adapter needed. On the product page, Menabo Sherman is listed among the compatible roof bars.

Technical details and what to watch for

The Menabo Sherman Silver roof bars carry up to 90 kg, and the Carbon Look 320L box takes up to 55 kg of luggage.
Both the load in the box and the weight of the box itself count against the 90 kg capacity of the bars; with 55 kg of luggage you keep a comfortable margin.
The 34 cm height of the box adds to the height of the car and the bars, so avoid low underground car parks and automatic car washes.
The 20 mm T-track of the Sherman bars also takes accessories with T-track fittings, not just U-bolt fittings.

We could not find a verified official Skoda figure for the roof load of the Octavia II Combi, so check the car's manual before heavy loads.
