About the car: Skoda Superb II (3T), saloon 2008-2013

The second-generation Skoda Superb has the internal code 3T (B6) and was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in early March 2008. It is built on the Volkswagen Group A6 (PQ46) platform, a stretched version of the Octavia platform, and was produced between 2008 and 2015. The base body is a 4-door saloon with a TwinDoor tailgate, and the estate (Combi) only came in June 2009. The facelift was presented in April 2013 and brought LED tail lights as standard, so the car in this fitting, with the old tail lights, is from the 2008-2013 series.

For a ski rack, the detail that matters is the roof. The Superb II saloon has no roof rails, and on the car in the photos the feet of the roof bars are fixed on the door frames. Even the original Skoda roof bars for this model fit in the gap between the door and the roof. So, before any ski rack, the Superb saloon needs a set of roof bars with a dedicated kit, and only then is the FatCat fitted on top.

What we fitted on this Superb

The Yakima FatCat EVO 4 Black ski & snowboard rack carries up to 4 pairs of skis or 2 snowboards. It has a universal fitting system, fixes to aluminium T-track bars and to rectangular steel bars, and fitting needs no other tools. The body is aluminium, 77.5 cm long, 9.5 cm wide and 13.3 cm high, and weighs 4.5 kg.

Two details make it comfortable on the slopes: a built-in SkiLift, for high bindings, and the DoubleJoint hinge, for thicker skis and snowboards. It also has a large button. The rack has locks for itself and for the equipment, so the skis stay secure when the car is parked.

Technical details and what to watch for

  • Yakima FatCat EVO 4 Black: maximum 4 pairs of skis or 2 snowboards, 53 cm loading area.
  • The weight of the rack, 4.5 kg, is subtracted from the capacity of the roof bars and from the maximum roof load given in the car's handbook.
  • Yakima FatCat 4/6 fitting instructions are available as a PDF on the product page; for the general steps also see our guide to fitting a ski rack on roof bars.
  • The rack is 13.3 cm high and sits on top of the roof bars, so the car with skis on the roof becomes taller; watch out for underground car parks and garages.
