About the car: Volkswagen Passat B6 (3C) saloon
The Volkswagen Passat B6 has the factory code 3C and was presented at Geneva in March 2005, with a European launch in the summer of the same year; production of the generation ended in 2010. The B6 moved to the PQ46 platform and is 9.2 cm longer and 7.4 cm wider than the B5. It came as a saloon and as a Variant estate, with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and the wheelbase is 2,709 mm.
The car in this fitting is a silver saloon; on the B6 saloon the roof has no roof rails, and the boot has a separate lid, not a tailgate. On a body like this, a towbar rack leaves the boot lid free of straps and pads and keeps the bikes on a low platform, where you load them without lifting them onto the roof. Towbar mounting is also the option we recommend for electric bikes or fat bikes, which are heavier than ordinary ones.
What we fitted on this Passat B6
The Menabo Antares rack for 2 bikes is a foldable model that attaches to the towbar with the Rapid-Lock system. The bikes sit on the platform, with a maximum of 25 kg each, and the total permitted load is 60 kg. The Antares is made of aluminium, weighs 16 kg and has a tilt function, so you can open the boot of the Passat with the rack fitted.
The rack comes with locks for the rack and for the bikes, a rear light board and a 13/7-pin electrical socket. The Antares cannot carry a towbar cargo box, so it is dedicated to bikes. Below you will also find our presentation clip.

Useful fitting details
- Capacity calculation: 2 bikes x 25 kg = 50 kg, under the 60 kg limit of the rack, so the Antares carries two electric bikes of up to 25 kg each with room to spare.
- Own weight: 16 kg. With two bikes of 25 kg, the load on the towbar is 66 kg; compare this figure with the vertical load permitted in the car documents, because for the Passat B6 we did not find an official Volkswagen value.
- 13/7-pin socket: before you set off, check the electrical wiring of the towbar and the lights of the rack.
- The number plate and the rear lights must stay visible with the bikes on.
- Foldable: the rack folds for storage; the packaging measures 77.5 x 59 x 80 cm.
