Carrying your equipment inside the car with you is not the right option, and it also exposes you to a major risk: any impact or sudden braking can turn skis or snowboards into a danger for you and the others in the car.

In principle, the best criterion for choosing a ski or snowboard rack is how much it can carry. So before choosing one, think about how many pairs of skis or snowboards you actually want to carry.

Types of ski and snowboard racks

Ski & snowboard racks come in several models and categories. In general, the best way to tell them apart is how they are installed and how they attach to the car.

It helps to know that racks can be:

- ski & snowboard racks for roof bars

- magnetic ski & snowboard racks

- towbar ski & snowboard racks

How do you fit a ski & snowboard rack?

Depending on the type of fitting, you follow a few steps for a correct and efficient installation. For racks that mount on roof bars, first make sure the rack's fitting matches your model of roof bars.

Some roof-bar ski racks use T-bolts, which only fit roof bars with a T-slot for the T-bolt to slide into. There are also roof-bar racks with U-bolts, which attach around the outside of the roof bars.

Magnetic racks are very simple to fit. You need no special keys or Allen keys: you just attach them to the car roof using the lever supplied. Before choosing one, however, make sure your car does not have a different type of roof.

Magnetic racks do not fit cars with:

- a panoramic roof

- a glass roof or retractable sunroof

- a ribbed or uneven roof

Towbar racks are quite intuitive to fit. Some have a special lever that clamps onto the towball, while others are fitted to the towbar with a classic bolt-on system. A big advantage of these racks is their large capacity.
