The approval standard EN 16662-1:2020 is the European standard for traction devices used on roads covered with snow or ice, such as snow socks, metal snow chains and similar devices. It ensures that products meet the technical and safety requirements set at European level. Here is what approval to this standard involves:

1. Safety and performance

The standard tests how well products perform in real-world conditions, making sure they give the grip needed on slippery surfaces without compromising driver or vehicle safety.

2. Vehicle compatibility

EN 16662-1:2020 includes requirements for how traction devices interact with the vehicle's wheels. The tests check that the devices:

• Do not interfere with braking systems (e.g. ABS, ESP).
• Do not damage tyres or wheels.

3. Material quality

Materials must be hard-wearing, must not damage road surfaces and must be safe for the user.

4. Easy to fit and remove

The standard also specifies that the devices must be easy to fit and remove, even in harsh conditions (cold, snow, ice).

5. Legal compliance in Europe

Devices approved to EN 16662-1:2020 are legally accepted in all European Union countries, including areas where snow chains or snow socks are compulsory in winter.

When a product is approved to this standard, you can be sure you are buying high-quality equipment that meets European safety and performance requirements.
