Thule Allax XL Compact car dog crate
Thule Allax XL Compact is a car dog crate designed to protect both the dog and the passengers. It was tested for frontal impact, rear impact and a simulated rollover at the Thule Test Center, and it is TUV SUD certified. The gas-strut door opens and closes smoothly, and the integrated lock keeps the crate secured when the boot is left open.
Size XL Compact suits dogs up to 65 cm at the withers (for example German Shepherd Dog, Boxer) and a maximum weight of 45 kg. The Compact version has the same width and height as size XL, but is shorter, for boots with a smaller depth.
Protection tested at the Thule Test Center
A 10-13 cm deformable zone remains between the crate and the rear seat back, even when the crate is set to its minimum depth. In a rear-end collision, this zone compresses, absorbs part of the impact energy and protects the dog. Thule Allax has won the iF Design Award 2024 and the Red Dot 2024.
Fits the boot without rattling
The depth adjusts between 89 and 94 cm, so you can fit it exactly to the length of your boot. The rounded edges follow the shape of the car body, and the tension straps keep the crate fixed while driving. The anodised aluminium and tough plastic construction does not squeak or vibrate on the road.
Practical every day
The window and side openings let you check on your dog at any time and keep the air flowing. The emergency hatch lets you open the crate from the cabin, from the rear seat, if the tailgate cannot be opened.

How to choose the crate size
Measure your dog's height at the withers, that is, the distance from the ground to the top of the shoulder blades. Inside the crate, your dog must be able to sit and stand, turn around and stretch out in a natural position. The crate should not be too large either, because while driving your dog could slide or be thrown from one side to the other.
- XS: up to 42 cm at the withers (for example Miniature Schnauzer, Jack Russell Terrier)
- S: up to 50 cm (Beagle, Cocker Spaniel)
- M and M Compact: up to 57 cm (Border Collie, Australian Shepherd)
- L and L Compact: up to 61 cm (Labrador Retriever, Dalmatian)
- XL and XL Compact: up to 65 cm (German Shepherd Dog, Boxer)
- XXL and XXL Compact: up to 70 cm (Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback)
Every dog is different, so use these values as a starting point: you know your dog best and how it travels.
Check that it fits your car
- Depth: measure from the back of the rear seat to the edge of the boot floor. On hatchbacks and SUVs, also check where the tailgate starts to slope.
- Height: measure from the boot floor to the lowest point of the tailgate or roof. Watch for low roof edges, which can block the crate.
- Boot sill: Thule Allax fits boots with a sill of up to 40 mm. For higher sills, a Thule Allax variant is available.
Note: Before buying, check that the crate can be fitted correctly in your car. The Thule Allax crate is intended exclusively for transporting dogs. Get your dog used to the crate before the first journey, and never leave your dog unattended in the car.
