Audi A4 Avant with Menabo Mania 460 ABS Black roof box

On this Audi A4 Avant we fitted the Menabo Mania 460 ABS Black roof box, one of the large boxes in the Menabo range. We did the fitting in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Audi A4 Avant, probably B5 (Typ 8D)

From the photos we have, the car looks like a first-generation A4 Avant, B5 (Typ 8D), but we cannot confirm it for certain. The first-generation A4 debuted in October 1994 on the Volkswagen Group B5 (PL45) platform, shared with the Passat B5. The estate version, the A4 Avant, was presented in November 1995 and went on sale in February 1996. In February 1999 there was another facelift, and the updated cars carry the code 8D2.

For a roof box, what matters is what the car has on its roof. This A4 Avant has raised silver roof rails, on which the roof bars are fixed, and the box is then fitted on the roof bars, not directly on the roof. The Mania 460 has universal compatibility, so it fits many types of bars. For the A4 Avant B5 we have no roof load from an official Audi source, so check the value in the car's manual.

Menabo Mania 460 ABS Black roof box is made of gloss black ABS plastic and has a volume of 460 L, with a maximum load capacity of 75 kg. It belongs to the large box category, with a length between 180 and 200 cm, has an anti-theft lock and opens on one side. The empty box weighs 20.2 kg.

For fixing, the Mania 460 comes with two systems included: 60 mm U-bolts and 20 mm T-bolts, for bars with a track. For bars that need an 80 mm U-bolt fitting there is the optional adapter 000065000000. The product data sheet lists it as directly compatible with Menabo Tiger, Leopard, Tema or Omega bars, and also with Thule SquareBar, WingBar, ProBar and SlideBar, Yakima ThruBar and FlushBar or K39.

Useful details for fitting and use

• Maximum load calculation: 20.2 kg box + 75 kg luggage = 95.2 kg on the roof bars; the bars and the roof of the car must allow this weight, otherwise you load less.
• The real loading limit is the lowest of the load capacity of the box, the maximum load of the roof bars and the roof load permitted by Audi.
• The box is 460 L, has an anti-theft lock and opens on one side, on the right, according to the product data sheet.
• The 60 mm U-bolt and 20 mm T-bolt fittings are included, so on most bars you do not need an adapter.

• With the box on the roof, the Audi A4 Avant becomes taller, so watch out for garages and underground car parks.
