About the car: Ford Transit Custom, first generation

The Transit Custom is a Ford model launched at the 2012 Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, built in its first generation from 2012 to 2023. It was offered as a van, crew cab van, Kombi and, for passengers, as the Tourneo Custom. In 2017 it received an update with revised styling and new engines, and the second generation was presented in September 2022, with production from 2023.

On the van in the photo, the rack is fitted to the towbar, and the van has twin rear doors. For a towbar-mounted rack the roof plays no part in the fitting, but it matters for garages: the low-roof version is 1,922-2,017 mm high and the high-roof version 2,280-2,381 mm. The tilting function of the Alcor 3 keeps access to the rear load area, even with the rack fitted.

Technical details and what to watch for

Capacity: 3 bikes, up to 25 kg each. The maximum load of the rack is 60 kg.
The rack weighs 22 kg. The 60 kg is the maximum load, not the weight of the rack.
The rack is lockable, and both the rack and the bikes are locked. Keep the keys separately, in a safe place.
After fitting, check that the tail lights and number plate stay visible, especially with large bikes on the rack.
The tilting function leaves access to the boot free. After each time you tilt the rack, check again that it is secure on the towbar.
Before setting off, check that the rack is firmly fixed to the towbar and that the Rapid-Lock lever is closed.
