About the car: Toyota Avensis 3rd generation (T270)

The Toyota Avensis T270 went on sale in January 2009 and was built at the Toyota plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, in England. This generation only existed as a saloon and an estate, with no hatchback. It received a first facelift in January 2012, and the second was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2015.

The car we fitted it on was a saloon, so it has no tailgate and no roof rails. For a saloon, a rack that attaches to the boot lid is a simple way to take the bikes along, without other accessories fitted to the car. Because the shape of the boot lid and its edges differs from car to car, compatibility is checked on the maker's list, model by model.

What we fitted on this Avensis

The K39 Holiday bike rack is made of steel and carries 3 bikes, with a maximum load of 45 kg. It fits on the boot lid or tailgate and is secured at 6 dedicated points with a set of straps, and the anti-scratch system protects the rear window and the bodywork. The bikes are held by the frame, in clamps, and accept any frame diameter.

The Holiday is foldable, so it takes up little space at home, and its packaging is only 67 x 52.5 x 10 cm. It is compatible with fat bikes, but not with electric bikes. It has no lock for the rack or for the bikes, and the bikes touch each other, so it is worth putting soft protection between the frames. You will find the compatibility list and the fitting instructions on the product page.

Technical details and what to watch for

  • The maximum load of 45 kg is shared between all the bikes: three bikes of 15 kg each already reach the limit of the K39 Holiday.
  • Before fitting, clean the boot lid and the contact area, so that dust or sand does not scratch the paint; the steps are explained in the guide Fitting steps for tailgate bike racks.
  • After tensioning the straps at the 6 attachment points, gently move the rack left and right; it must sit firmly without sliding.
  • After loading, check that the bikes do not cover the number plate and the rear lights of the Avensis.
  • Electric bikes do not go on the K39 Holiday; for them choose a model from the towbar-mounted racks category.
  • The K39 Holiday has no lock, neither on the rack nor on the bikes; on long stops use a separate lock or take the bikes with you.
