About the car: Mazda 3 first generation (BK)

The first-generation Mazda 3 has the model code BK and was built from June 2003 to November 2008, for model years 2004-2009. It uses the Ford C1 platform, shared with the European Ford Focus and the Volvo S40, and was offered as a 4-door saloon and a 5-door hatchback. For model year 2007 it received a minor facelift, with a changed front bumper and fog lights.

The car in the fitting is a black 5-door Mazda 3 BK hatchback, with no roof rails on the roof. On a roof like this the bars are fitted to the body, with fixings made for that model: the feet clamp to the door frames. For this reason the kit is chosen by generation and body style, and the one we fitted is for the Mazda 3 BK 5-door, 2003-2009.

What we fitted on this Mazda 3 BK

We fitted the Menabo Tema Steel roof bars for Mazda 3 (BK), 5-door, 2003-2009. The bars are made of steel, with an oval, aerodynamic profile, 1,300 mm long, 30 mm high and 48 mm wide. The metal parts have rubberised, anti-corrosion paint, and the bars are wrapped in a protective plastic layer. The set carries a maximum of 50 kg and is TÜV and ISO approved.

The package contains 4 fixings for the Mazda 3 BK, 4 feet, 2 steel bars, 4 locks with keys and an Allen key, the only tool you need for fitting. The Tema Steel bars have no channel on top, so accessories, from bike racks and roof boxes to ski or kayak racks, fix with the standard U-bolt fitting around the outside of the bar.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Bar dimensions: 1,300 mm long, 30 mm high, 48 mm wide, steel; the set weighs 5.8 kg.
• Capacity: 50 kg on the bars. First subtract the weight of the accessory from this figure: for example, a 10 kg accessory leaves 40 kg for the load.
• Roof load: check the maximum roof load in the Mazda 3 BK manual and respect the lower of that figure and the 50 kg of the bars.
• Fixing accessories: only with U-bolt clamps around the outside of the bar; check on the accessory sheet that the clamps fit a bar 48 mm wide.
• Anti-theft lock: 4 locks with keys.
• Height: with the bars and accessories on the roof, the Mazda 3 becomes taller; keep this in mind at underground car parks and car washes.
