Mercedes GLE Coupe C167 with Menabo Alcor 4 towbar bike rack, for 4 bikes

On a Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe of the C167 generation we fitted the Menabo Alcor 4, designed for 4 bikes and mounted on the towbar. The fitting was done in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe 2nd generation (C167)

The fourth-generation GLE carries the codes W167 for the SUV and C167 for the coupe version. The second-generation GLE Coupe was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019, and its wheelbase is about 60 mm shorter than that of the classic SUV GLE. In January 2023 the range received the facelift for model year 2024, with completely redesigned headlights and rear lights.

On a coupe SUV the roof line slopes down towards the rear, so lifting four bikes onto the roof would be awkward. On the towbar, the bikes sit lower and load easily, one after another. The car we fitted it on was a white GLE Coupe 4Matic, equipped with a towbar.

What we fitted on this GLE Coupe

The Menabo Alcor 4 rack is an aluminium platform for 4 bikes, with a maximum of 25 kg per bike and 60 kg in total. It attaches to the towbar through the Rapid-Lock system, with a lever, and the bikes are secured by the frame. It accepts electric bikes and fat bikes.

Alcor 4 has a lock for the rack and for the bikes, a tilting function for access to the boot with the rack fitted, and its own rear lights, with a 13/7-pin socket. It is compatible with the Menabo Mizar box, so it can also carry luggage. The fitting instructions and full specifications are on the product page.

Technical details and what to watch for

• The rack weighs 24 kg and is 120 cm long, 120 cm high and 22 cm wide.
• The 60 kg limit matters more than the 25 kg per bike: four bikes of 25 kg would be 100 kg, so with 4 bikes the average must be at most 15 kg.
• Two electric bikes of 25 kg add up to 50 kg, so there is room for at most 10 kg more.
• With the rack loaded to the maximum, 84 kg end up on the towbar (24 kg + 60 kg); check the permitted vertical load in the car's manual.
• Alcor 4 is not extendable; if you do not need 4 places, the Alcor range also has versions for 2 or 3 bikes.
• Connect the socket and check the rack's rear lights and indicators before you set off, because the bikes cover the lamps of the GLE.
