A white first-generation facelift Renault Clio Symbol received a Menabo Mistral boot rack at our shop, made for up to 3 bikes. We did the fitting in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Renault Clio Symbol, first generation facelift (2006-2008)

The Clio Symbol is the 4-door saloon derived from the Clio II: it entered production at the end of 1999, in Turkey, and was built until 2008, on the Renault A platform (X65). Over those years it went through several updates: the front end of the new Clio hatchback in March 2002, clear-lens rear lights and a slightly modified grille in the first half of 2005, then the 2006 facelift, which reached Europe in autumn of that year, with body-coloured bumpers and a new boot handle with the Renault badge built in. The car in this fitting has rear lights with a clear section and the Renault badge on the boot handle, so it belongs to the last series.

What does this mean for a bike rack? The Clio Symbol has no roof rails, and without roof bars the roof cannot take a rack. The boot lid remains the most convenient place: the Mistral sits on it, and the straps hold it firmly on the bodywork. On a saloon the bikes sit behind the car, at boot level, so they do not have to be lifted onto the roof.

What we fitted on this Renault Clio Symbol

The Menabo Mistral rack for 3 bikes, tailgate or boot-mounted, is an easy model to use and quick to fit. It sits on the boot and is secured with the straps supplied in the box, and the contact points with the car are rubber, with rubberised paint, so they do not scratch the bodywork. The bikes hang by the frame, and the Mistral has clamps to hold them.

The maximum load is 45 kg for up to 3 bikes, the frame can have any diameter, and fat bikes are accepted. E-bikes are not compatible. The rack is made of steel, folds, is certified and ISO tested and has no anti-theft lock. On the product page you will also find a presentation video.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Menabo Mistral capacity: 3 bikes and a maximum of 45 kg; three bikes of 13 kg each come to 39 kg, under the limit.
• Fixed to the bodywork at 6 points, with straps included in the box and rubberised contact surfaces.
• The bikes touch each other on the rack, so protect the frames where they make contact.
• Anti-theft lock: neither the rack nor the bikes have a locking system included.

• After loading, look at the car from a few metres behind and check that the rear lights and number plate stay in view.
