Nissan Qashqai J10 (2006-2013) with Menabo Biki tailgate bike rack for 3 bikes

We fitted the Menabo Biki tailgate bike rack, designed for up to 3 bikes, on a first-generation Nissan Qashqai (J10). The fitting was done in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Nissan Qashqai J10 (2006-2013)

The Nissan Qashqai J10 is the first generation of the model, built between 2006 and 2013 on the Renault-Nissan C platform, as a 5-door crossover SUV. The facelift was announced in December 2009 and went on sale in March 2010. From July 2008 the Qashqai+2 was also built, a longer 7-seater version: 4,535 mm long with a 2,760 mm wheelbase.

Our car is a 5-seater Qashqai J10 with raised silver roof rails. For a tailgate rack the roof does not matter, because the rack attaches to the tailgate; what matters is that the car appears on the Menabo compatibility list, and the longer Qashqai+2 should be checked separately. The roof rails are a plus if you later want roof bars and a roof bike rack.

What we fitted on this Qashqai J10

We chose the Menabo Biki bike rack for 3 bikes, tailgate or boot-mounted, a simple solution for anyone without roof bars or a towbar. The rack is made of steel, attaches to the bodywork at 6 points and holds the bikes by the frame, on arms with bumps, without a separate clamp for each bike.

The Menabo Biki takes any frame diameter and is compatible with fat bikes, but not with e-bikes. On this rack the bikes touch each other, so it is worth taking care how you arrange them. The rack is foldable, so it is easy to fold away when you are not using it. It has no anti-theft lock, either for the rack or for the bikes.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Capacity: 3 bikes and a maximum of 45 kg in total, which is on average 15 kg per bike if you carry all three.
• The rack weighs 4 kg, is made of silver and black steel and comes in packaging measuring 67 x 52 x 10 cm.
• Not compatible with e-bikes; fat bikes are fine, and the frame diameter does not matter.
• Clean the tailgate before fitting, so that sand does not scratch the paint, and place the rack in the centre of the tailgate; after tightening, move it left and right to check that it sits firmly.
• With the bikes on, check that the number plate and rear lights stay visible and that the pedals or handlebars do not touch the bodywork.
