On a 5-door Opel Corsa we fitted the Menabo Biki bike rack, tailgate-mounted. The fitting was done in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Opel Corsa D (S07), 5-door

The car in this fitting is a 5-door Opel Corsa hatchback, most likely from the D generation, with model code S07. The Corsa D was built between 2006 and 2014, as a 3-door and 5-door hatchback, on the SCCS platform shared with the Fiat Grande Punto. The facelift announced in November 2010 brought the Eagle Eye headlights, and the updated version reached dealers on 29 January 2011.

For carrying bikes, the Corsa D offers three ways: roof bars, the FlexFix system built into the rear bumper, which was a factory option, or a tailgate rack. On this car we chose the tailgate: a Menabo tailgate rack rests on rubber pads and is held by straps attached to the edge of the tailgate, with no other accessories needed. It is a quick option for anyone who does not have FlexFix and does not want roof bars.

Menabo Biki bike rack for 3 bikes fixes to the tailgate or boot lid of the car with 6 fixings on the body. It is made of steel, in silver and black, weighs 4 kg and folds when not in use, with a packed size of 67 x 52 x 10 cm. It can carry up to 45 kg of bikes.

The arms of the rack have no clamps, but ridges that hold the bikes in position; the fixing is on the frame, and the frame diameter is not limited. The Biki takes a fat bike but not e-bikes, and the bikes touch each other on the rack, so it is best to place them carefully.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Load calculation: the 45 kg is shared by all the bikes; three bikes of 15 kg each reach the limit, while one of 20 kg and one of 15 kg still leave 10 kg.
• Own weight: 4 kg, easy to put on and take off the tailgate of a Corsa, and it is stored folded.
• Bikes accepted: Fat bike yes, e-bike no; fixing on the frame, any diameter.
• No lock: the rack has no lock, either for itself or for the bikes.
• Non-metal edges: if the edge of the tailgate is not metal, Menabo packs include adapters for the straps.
• Visibility: check, with the bikes loaded, that the number plate and the Corsa's rear lights remain visible.
