About the car: Renault Clio IV (X98), 5-door hatchback
The Renault Clio IV carries the internal code X98 and was built from 2012 to 2020, on a modified version of the Renault-Nissan B platform. As a hatchback it was offered only with five doors, with the rear door handles hidden next to the window, and in 2016 it received a facelift. The car in this fitting is a Clio IV hatchback, so it has a tailgate at the back, not a boot lid like a saloon.
It is the tailgate that makes this type of fitting possible. The Clio IV hatchback has no roof rails, so for a roof bike rack you would first need roof bars fixed on the door frames. A tailgate rack skips this step: it rests on the rear of the car and is held by straps attached to the edges of the tailgate, and when you are not using it you fold it and put it away.
What we fitted on this Clio IV
We chose the Menabo Mistral bike rack for 3 bikes, mounted on the tailgate or boot lid. It is made of steel, is quick to fit and is secured with the straps supplied, through 6 fixing points on the bodywork. It can take up to 3 bikes, with a maximum capacity of 45 kg.
The contact points with the car are rubber, with rubberised paint, so they do not scratch the bodywork, and the rack is certified and ISO tested. The bikes are held by the frame with clamps, and the product page states that they can touch each other on the rack. The product page says the Mistral is compatible with fat bikes, but not with e-bikes. It has no anti-theft lock, either for the rack or for the bikes.

- Quick sum: 45 kg divided by 3 bikes is on average 15 kg per bike, so with heavier bikes you carry fewer.
