Renault Megane III Grandtour with Menabo Brio roof bars and Menabo Mania roof box

On a dark grey Renault Megane III Grandtour we fitted Menabo Brio roof bars on the roof rails and a Menabo Mania 460 ABS Black roof box. We did the fitting in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Renault Megane III Grandtour (X95)

The Renault Megane III, code X95, was produced from December 2008 to 2016, on the Renault-Nissan C platform. The 5-door estate appeared in June 2009 under the name Sport Tourer, also known as Grandtour (code KZ0/1), alongside the hatchback (BZ0/1), coupé (DZ) and coupé-convertible (EZ). The range was facelifted in January 2012 and again for 2014.

The car in the post has raised roof rails, with a gap between them and the roof. This makes the choice much simpler: you do not need a kit on the door frames, but roof bars that attach directly to the roof rails, such as Menabo Brio. Note that there is also a Megane III Grandtour without roof rails, which takes roof bars that fit onto the body, so the first step is to look at the roof of your car.

What we fitted on this Megane Grandtour

We started from Menabo Brio roof bars, made of aluminium, with an aerodynamic profile that reduces noise and drag. The set has 2 bars of 1,200 mm and 4 pre-assembled feet, which attach to the roof rails with the Allen key from the package. The roof bars have a 14 mm T-track along their full length, an anti-theft lock and a maximum load of 90 kg, are TÜV tested, tested to ISO/PAS 11154:2006 and meet DIN 75302.

On the roof bars we put the Menabo Mania 460 ABS Black roof box, made of glossy black ABS plastic, with a volume of 460 litres and a maximum load of 75 kg. The box has a lock, opens on one side and comes with a 60 mm U-bolt and a 20 mm T-bolt fitting included; its data sheet lists it as compatible with Menabo Brio roof bars.

Useful fitting details

• Load calculation: the Brio roof bars carry 90 kg and the Mania 460 box weighs 20.2 kg, which leaves 69.8 kg for luggage, below the box's limit of 75 kg.
• We do not have the roof load permitted by Renault for the Megane III Grandtour officially confirmed; check it in the car's manual, because the Brio data sheet states that the limit can differ by car.
• The Brio bar profile is 28 mm high and 48 mm wide.
• For correct fitting, Menabo recommends the instruction manual included in the roof bar package; for the box, the instructions are in PDF on the product page.
• With the roof bars fitted, we recommend a maximum of 130 km/h; details in the guide to roof bar noise.
• With the box on the roof, the estate becomes taller: watch out for underground car parks and garages.
