Toyota RAV4 XA30 (2005-2012): Menabo Mania 460 DUO roof box with double opening

We fitted the Menabo Mania 460 DUO roof box on a Toyota RAV4 XA30 at the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom in Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Toyota RAV4 XA30 (2005-2012)

The Toyota RAV4 XA30 is the third generation of the model, presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2005 and built for export, including for Europe, from November 2005 to December 2012. It is built on the Toyota New MC platform and was only offered as a 5-door SUV, with no 3-door version; in Europe the short-wheelbase version was sold. The first facelift, with a redesigned front, came in 2008 in some markets. The RAV4 in this fitting is a dark grey pre-facelift car.

Unlike the RAV4 XA40, which moved to a lift-up tailgate, the XA30 has a side-hinged rear door. For a roof box this means there is no tailgate swinging up towards the box. The roof box fits on roof bars, so the first thing to check on a RAV4 XA30 is the right roof bar set for its roof.

What we fitted on this RAV4 XA30

We fitted the the Menabo Mania 460 DUO ABS Black roof box, made of glossy black ABS plastic, with a volume of 460 L and a maximum load of 75 kg. The roof box weighs 20.4 kg and belongs to the range of large roof boxes, between 180 and 200 cm long.

The advantage of the DUO version is the opening on both sides: you can load and unload luggage from the left or the right side of the RAV4, depending on where you parked. It fixes to the roof bars with the Quick Fixing clamp, included, and the 20 mm T-track fitting is optional, with adapter 000063600000. The roof box also has a lock.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Menabo Mania 460 DUO: 460 L, maximum load 75 kg, own weight 20.4 kg, opens on both sides.
• Useful calculation: the 20.4 kg roof box loaded with 75 kg of luggage means 95.4 kg on the roof bars, so the roof bars and the roof of the RAV4 must accept this weight.
• Directly compatible with many Menabo and K39 roof bar models and with Thule WingBar and SquareBar; on Thule ProBar and SlideBar it fits with the 20 mm T-track adapter, code 000063600000.
• With the roof box on the roof, the RAV4 XA30 becomes taller: watch out for underground car parks, garages and car washes.
• Menabo recommends not exceeding 130 km/h when the roof bars are fitted on the car.
