The Volkswagen Golf 7, model code 5G, was built in Europe between 2012 and 2020 on the MQB platform, as a 3-door or 5-door hatchback and as an estate. The facelift version, called the Golf 7.5, was presented in November 2016 and received LED rear lights as standard. The car in this fitting is a black 5-door hatchback from the first phase of the generation. The old title only said Golf, and the generation can be seen from the fitting photos.
The Golf 7 hatchback has a bare roof, without roof rails. For roof bars this means fitting directly onto the body: in our photos you can see the foot of the Menabo bar clamped onto the door frame. The Tema roof bars are designed for cars without factory roof rails, with a vehicle-specific fitting kit for each model, so on the Golf the generation and the number of doors matter when we choose the kit.
What we fitted on this Golf
On the roof we fitted the Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars, some of the best-known roof bars on the market. The bars have an oval, aerodynamic profile, 30 mm high and 48 mm wide, and the metal parts are treated with a rubberised anti-corrosion coating. The set is lockable and TÜV and ISO tested.
On top, the bars have a 20 mm T-track, where accessories with a T fitting are attached: bike racks, roof boxes, ski racks or kayak racks. If your accessory does not have a T fitting, you can fix it with a U-bolt fitting around the bar. The package contains 4 fitting kit parts, 4 feet, 2 aluminium bars, 4 lock cylinders with keys and an Allen key. No other tool is needed.
Technical details and what to watch for
- Bar profile: aluminium, 30 mm high and 48 mm wide, silver colour.
- Capacity: maximum 50 kg. The weight of the accessory (rack, box) is subtracted from this value, and what is left is what you can load.
- Car limit: the maker of the roof bars states that the maximum load can differ depending on the car, so also check the roof load in the Volkswagen manual.
- Fixing accessories: T fitting in the 20 mm T-track, or U-bolt fitting around the bar.
- Instructions: the instruction manual is included in the pack.
