About the car: Volkswagen Polo 5 (Typ 6R)

The Polo 6R is the fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo, built on the PQ25 platform and made for Europe from 2009 to 2017 as a 3-door and 5-door hatchback. The 2014 facelift changed the name to Polo 6C, which is why the roof bar kits for the 6R are listed for 2009-2014 models.

A standard Polo has no roof rails on the roof; only the CrossPolo, the 5-door version, has factory roof rails, in silver. So for a roof box we need roof bars that fit directly onto the roof, and the kit is chosen by the number of doors.

What we fitted on this Polo

We started from the Menabo Tema Steel roof bars for the Volkswagen Polo V (6R), 3-door, with a 30 x 48 mm oval profile and a length of 1,120 mm. The bars have no T-track on top, so accessories attach with U-bolt fittings around the bar. The pack contains 4 feet, 4 locks with keys and the Allen key.

On the bars we fitted the Menabo Mania 320 ABS White roof box, made of glossy white ABS plastic. It holds 320 litres, carries 50 kg, opens on one side (the right) and has an anti-theft lock. It comes with 60 mm U-bolt fittings included, and 80 mm U-bolt or 20 mm T-bolt fittings are available as an option. It fits Menabo Tema Steel roof bars directly.

Technical details and what to watch for

• The Tema Steel roof bars carry 50 kg, the same as the Mania 320 box; the total on the roof, box plus luggage, stays at 50 kg.
• The weight of the box, given on the product sheet, is deducted from the 50 kg; what is left is the maximum load for luggage.
• Also check the technical specifications of the Volkswagen Polo; the lower value applies.
• Bars: 1,120 mm long, 30 x 48 mm profile, black steel; the set weighs 5.3 kg.
• Box: 320 litres, under 140 cm long, 60 mm U-bolt fittings included.
