About the car: Volkswagen Polo 5 (Typ 6R)

The fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo has the internal code Typ 6R and uses the PQ25 platform. In Europe it was built between 2009 and 2017, and the 5-door version was presented in Geneva in March 2009. In 2014 it received a facelift and became the Polo 6C.

The standard Polo 6R has a normal roof without roof rails; only the CrossPolo, offered only as a 5-door, comes from the factory with silver roof rails. So on an ordinary Polo the roof bars clamp directly onto the roof, and the fitting kit must be chosen for the 5-door body.

What we fitted on this Polo 5

On the roof we fitted Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars for Volkswagen Polo V (6R), 5-door, 2009-2014 model. The pack contains 2 aluminium bars of 1,120 mm, 4 feet, 4 vehicle-specific fitting kits, 4 lock cylinders with keys and an Allen key. The profile is oval and aerodynamic, 30 mm tall and 48 mm wide, and the metal parts have a rubberised anti-corrosion coating.

On top, the Tema Aluminium has a 20 mm channel for T-bolt accessories: bike racks, roof boxes, ski racks or kayak/canoe carriers. Accessories that only have a U-bolt fitting go around the bar. The bars are TÜV and ISO approved.

Technical details and what to watch for

• Bar dimensions: length 1,120 mm, height 30 mm, width 48 mm; silver aluminium.
• Weight of the roof bar set: 4.9 kg.
• Maximum load: 50 kg, from which the weight of the accessory is subtracted. For example, a rack or box weighing 15 kg leaves you 35 kg for the load.
• The capacity can differ by car; check the roof load in the car's technical specifications.
• Accessories fit with a T-bolt in the 20 mm channel or with a U-bolt around the outside of the bar.
• The instruction manual is included in the box.
• Menabo recommends not exceeding 130 km/h with the roof bars fitted, as explained in our guide to roof bar wind noise. With accessories on the roof, allow for the car's extra height in underground car parks and car washes.
