About the car: Volkswagen Polo 5 (Typ 6R)

The Polo 6R is the fifth generation of Volkswagen's compact model, built on the PQ25 platform and produced for Europe between 2009 and 2017. The 5-door version was presented first, at Geneva in March 2009; the 3-door appeared at Frankfurt in September the same year. The 2014 facelift brought the name Polo 6C, on the PQ26 platform, and outside Europe a 4-door saloon was also sold.

For a roof box, everything starts with the roof. The standard Polo has no roof rails; only the CrossPolo, which exists only as a 5-door, has them from the factory, in silver. This means that before the box we need roof bars that attach to the bodywork, and the fitting kit is chosen according to the exact body type.

What we fitted on this Polo 5

The first step was the Menabo Tema roof bar set, attached directly to the bodywork. The roof bars are the base on which you then fit roof accessories, such as roof boxes, bike racks, ski racks or kayak carriers.

Technical details and what to watch for

• On the standard Polo 6R the roof bars attach to the bodywork, with a fitting kit chosen for the 5-door version.
• The weight of the roof box is subtracted from the load capacity of the roof bars; what remains is the maximum weight of the luggage.
• Also respect the maximum roof load in the technical data of your Volkswagen Polo: the lower of that value and the load capacity of the roof bars applies.
• Menabo recommends a maximum speed of 130 km/h with the roof bars fitted, as explained in our guide to roof bar wind noise.
• With the box on the roof the car becomes taller; keep this in mind at garages, underground car parks and car washes.
