About the car: BMW X1 E84 (2009-2015)
The BMW X1 E84 is the first generation of the compact BMW X1 SUV, built from October 2009 to June 2015, when it was replaced by the X1 F48. It has 5 doors, 5 seats, a length of 4,454 mm and a wheelbase of 2,760 mm, and is built on the BMW 3 Series E90 platform. The 2012 facelift brought new headlights, tail lights, front bumpers and mirrors with integrated indicators.
Roof rails (roof railing) were optional on the BMW X1 E84, so there are cars with a bare roof and cars with roof rails. Menabo Tema kits for the car body are made for cars without roof rails and come separately for 2009-2012 and 2012-2015. For cars with roof rails, other bars are used, such as the Menabo Tiger XL.
What we fitted on this BMW X1
The Menabo Tema Aluminium for BMW X1 (E84), 5-door, 2012-2015 contains 2 aluminium bars of 1,300 mm, 4 feet, 4 vehicle-specific fitting kits, 4 locks with keys and an Allen key. The bars have an oval profile of 48 x 30 mm, and the metal parts are treated with rubberised paint and an anti-corrosion coating.
On top, the bars have a 20 mm channel where accessories with a T-track fitting attach: bike racks, roof boxes, ski racks or kayak carriers. Accessories with a U-bolt fitting are fixed around the outside of the bar. The set is TÜV and ISO approved, and the bars carry a maximum of 50 kg.

Useful details
- The set weighs 5.2 kg, and the bars carry a maximum of 50 kg.
- The 2009 BMW press kit gives a roof load of 75 kg for the X1 E84 (launch models). The limit to respect is the lowest one, which is the 50 kg of the bars, and this includes the weight of the accessory: a 15 kg box, for example, leaves 35 kg for luggage.
- The maximum load can differ depending on the make and model of the car, so also check the data in the BMW X1 manual.
- Accessories with a T-bolt fitting go into the 20 mm T-track, and those with a U-bolt fitting are secured around the outside of the bar.
- With a bike or a box on the roof, the car becomes taller: keep this in mind at underground car parks and when entering a garage.
- Fitting needs only the Allen key from the box, and the instruction manual is included in the box.

Why do roof bars whistle on a BMW X1 while driving?
Fitting accessories changes the aerodynamics, and the noise depends on the profile, the accessories and the speed. An oval profile lets air pass more easily than a square one, and Menabo recommends not exceeding 130 km/h with the bars fitted. More in the guide Why do my roof bars make noise while driving.
