Honda Civic X Hatchback (FK) with Menabo Stand Up 3 tailgate-mounted bike rack

On a 5-door Honda Civic X Hatchback we fitted the Menabo Stand Up 3 bike rack, which fixes to the tailgate and needs neither roof bars nor a towbar. We did the fitting in the SuportBicicleta.ro showroom at Drumul Lunca Corbului 2, Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania.

About the car: Honda Civic X Hatchback (FK), tenth generation

The tenth-generation Honda Civic was built between 2016 and 2021 on the CCA platform. The 5-door hatchback carries the codes FK4, FK7 and FK8 and was developed jointly by the Honda teams in Europe and Japan; it was built in Swindon in the UK, and also in Thailand and China. In Europe, the Civic X Hatchback went on sale in spring 2017.

The Civic in this fitting has a roof without roof rails, so the roof option would first have needed a set of roof bars with a dedicated fitting kit. A tailgate-mounted rack skips this step: it fixes to the bodywork with straps and goes on or comes off quickly. The compatibility of each model is checked in the Menabo list on the product page.

What we fitted on this Civic X Hatchback

We chose the Menabo Stand Up 3 tailgate/boot-mounted bike rack, the version for 3 bikes. It is made of aluminium, fixes to the bodywork at 6 points with dedicated straps and has scratch-protective surfaces for both the car and the bikes. The bikes sit on rails, are held to the wheels with clamps and to the frame with the arms of the rack, so they do not touch each other.

The Stand Up 3 takes frames of any diameter and carries a maximum of 45 kg in total. It is not designed for electric bikes or fat bikes, however, and the rack has no lock of its own. Useful details

• Load capacity: 45 kg for 3 bikes means an average of 15 kg per bike; check the weight of the bikes before the trip, especially with mountain bikes.
• Electric bikes and fat bikes: the Stand Up 3 is not compatible with them; if your car has a towbar, look at towbar bike racks, as we explain in the comparison between roof-mounted and towbar-mounted racks.
• Before fitting, clean the tailgate well, so that dust or sand under the pads does not scratch the paint, then check by moving the rack from side to side that it sits firmly, as we explain in the fitting steps for tailgate-mounted racks.
• Make sure the handlebars and pedals do not touch the bodywork and that the number plate and the rear lights of the Civic stay visible with the bikes on.
