About the car: Volkswagen Golf VIII 5-door hatchback
The Golf VIII, with the code CD, is the generation launched by Volkswagen in Wolfsburg on 24 October 2019 and built on the MQB Evo platform. The hatchback is built only as a 5-door, and the model received a facelift, known as the Golf 8.5, presented on 24 January 2024 and on sale from July 2024.
The hatchback has a normal roof, without roof rails, so accessories on the roof need roof bars that fix to the body. ADAC gives a maximum roof load of 75 kg for the Golf 5-door hatchback (CD), above the 50 kg capacity of the Menabo Tema roof bars, so here the practical limit comes from the roof bars.
What we fitted on this Volkswagen Golf
We used Menabo Tema Aluminium roof bars for Volkswagen Golf VIII, 5-door, a set designed for cars without factory roof rails. Each bar is 1,300 mm long, 30 mm high and 48 mm wide, with an oval, aerodynamic profile, and the complete set weighs 5.2 kg.
On top there is a 20 mm T-track for accessories with a T-track fitting. If a rack or roof box has no T-track fitting, it can be fitted with the U-bolt fitting around the outside of the bar. The metal parts have rubberised paint and anti-corrosion treatment, and the set comes with 4 fixings, 4 feet and 4 locks with keys.
Technical details and what to watch for
- The capacity of the Menabo Tema roof bars is 50 kg; the weight of the accessory is subtracted from it, and the rest is left for the load.
- Compared with the 75 kg roof load given by ADAC for the Golf VIII hatchback, the roof bars are the lower limit, so calculate with 50 kg.
- The roof bars are silver aluminium, have a lock and are TÜV and ISO certified.
